Russian patent trending and GDP
Groups:
Rounding out our "BRIC" analysis, we visit Moscow, combing through the patent records and compare with GDP trending (as we did with Brazil and China previously). Once again, we encounter a familiar set of curves with marked growth occuring 1998 and beyond. As with the other analysis, this data is rich with opportunity for further analysis - we leave you with just this tidbit to whet your appetite and invite you to join us in the many additional inquiries. Keep in mind again we are tracking ONLY WIPO and US published patents (apps for WIPO) for the purpose of this analysis.

Question
Ereeves -
I've enjoyed your "BRIC" analysis posts.
I was wondering if the growth in patent applications in Russia would be even more remarkable if you used EPO data instead of USPTO. It is my understanding that many Russian inventors will file directly EPO, bypassing WIPO. Unfortunately, I'm not aware of similar trends for Brazil nor China.
Thank you.

Thanks for the feedback. I
Thanks for the feedback. I will follow up with an analysis of EPO patenting activity per your suggestion. I specifically focused on US and WIPO because I was interested more in the "growth/participation in the global community" and considered these good markers for this analysis, but no question looking into EPO filing trends would add more to this and I imagine new trends might emerge, certainly from a timing perspective.
